There is no single vehicle suitable for every F-road. Some easier routes can be driven in a small 4x4 such as a Dacia Duster or similar. Rougher roads and routes with more demanding river crossings may require a large 4x4 such as a Toyota Land Cruiser or Hilux. Iceland's most difficult roads and unnumbered tracks may require a modified 4x4, Super Jeep or organised transport. The vehicle shown on this map is generally the vehicle I recommend planning the road around. In dry or especially favourable conditions, some roads may occasionally be possible in a smaller vehicle, but that depends on water levels, road conditions and the driver's experience. Do not choose your rental based on the smallest vehicle that may get through in ideal conditions. Also confirm that the exact vehicle and route are permitted by your rental company.

What is the difference between the vehicle categories?

Small 4x4: Vehicles such as a Dacia Duster, Suzuki Vitara or similar. Best suited to easier F-roads, rough gravel roads and routes without significant river crossings. Large 4x4: Vehicles such as a Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Hilux or similar. These generally provide more ground clearance, stability and capability on rough roads and moderate river crossings. Modified 4x4: Raised and specially prepared vehicles, often fitted with approximately 33- or 35-inch tyres, additional ground clearance and off-road equipment such as a snorkel. A snorkel can help protect the engine's air intake, but it does not make a deep or powerful river safe. Traction, current, vehicle weight, riverbed conditions and the driver's experience still matter. For F-road driving, I generally recommend choosing the rental company's highest or most comprehensive insurance package. Highland driving exposes the vehicle to gravel, rocks, tyre damage, rough surfaces and, depending on the route, sand and ash. More comprehensive coverage can reduce your financial exposure for many of these common risks. However, 'full insurance' does not mean that every type of damage is covered. Underbody damage, towing, driving on prohibited roads, negligence and water damage may still be excluded, depending on the company and package. Read the actual coverage and exclusions carefully rather than relying only on names such as Full, Premium, Zero Excess or Platinum.

Are river crossings covered by rental-car insurance?

Usually not, but a small number of rental companies now offer limited river-crossing or water-damage protection with selected insurance packages and approved 4x4 vehicles. Most Icelandic rental companies still exclude damage caused by driving through rivers, flooded areas or other water. Even when river-crossing protection is offered, it may apply only to specific vehicles, roads and types of damage, and may exclude particularly dangerous crossings such as Krossá. Read the exact policy terms carefully before relying on this coverage. Check which vehicle components are covered, whether towing and recovery are included, which roads or rivers are excluded and whether negligence invalidates the protection. Insurance does not make a river safe to cross. River depth, current and the safest line can change quickly, and you should always turn around when uncertain.

Pay attention to wind, rain, temperature and official warnings—not only the forecast shown for the nearest town. Conditions in the Highlands can be very different from the coast and may change quickly. Heavy rain can raise rivers, while snow, fog and strong wind can make an otherwise manageable road unsafe. Check both websites shortly before entering the Highlands and save or screenshot the information you need. Mobile coverage is often weak or unavailable once you are inside the Highlands, so you may not be able to check again later.
